Help bring Mountain Fountain to Parnell
Let Council know Parnell is the best choice by October 4

Last October, Terry Stringer's Mountain Fountain was removed from Aotea Square ahead of the square's redevelopment. Since then, Auckland City Council has been working closely with the sculptor, exploring a number of possible new locations for the artwork. Together, they've narrowed it down to two possibilities: in Parnell at Holy Trinity Cathedral and in the Selwyn Reserve at Mission Bay .

Aucklanders are now being asked to give their views on where this prominent modern sculpture should go, by having your say online. But be quick - your views are needed by Sunday October 4th at the Auckland City Council website here: www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/projects/mountainfountain

Of course, Parnell Inc would love to have the Mountain Fountain come to Parnell - as would Dean Ross Bay, the Cathedral Resources Board and Bishops Faculty Committee, the Parnell Community Committee and many other Parnell people. As a former long-time resident, Terry Stringer would also be delighted to have Parnell be the sculpture's new home.

As noted by Council's Public Art Manager, Pontus Kyander: "The fountain would pick up on the established architecture of the cathedral and the forecourt design, integrating it within the existing paving layout.  It would also compliment Professor Toy's original vision for the cathedral, with an artwork placed approximately where a sculpture was originally planned."

There are many other excellent reasons for re-siting the sculpture in Parnell, rather than in Mission Bay. We've compiled a list on Parnell's website here.

Please go online and let Council know we want this sculpture in Parnell! And enlist others too - make sure everyone in your office goes online to ensure Parnell gets its first major piece of public art. It will look wonderful!

Creative Quarter demands great design
Submission lodged against plans for 202 Parnell Road

Parnell Inc. today lodged a submission against the development proposed for the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand's site at 202 Parnell Road.

Parnell Inc.'s primary opposition to the building proposed for the site is the utilitarian design of the development, which is not in keeping with the area, and with additional concerns regarding parking arrangements, layout and traffic generation.

Nicholas Stevens, an award-winning architect and director of Parnell practice, Stevens Lawson Architects, was invited to put forward his concerns about the architectural quality of proposed building for inclusion in this submission. Nicholas's views reflect the association's grave concerns of the damaging aesthetic impact the development would have on Parnell Road's landscape well into the future.

"The proposed building design is of poor quality and lacks character and vision. It has an inappropriate scale, uninspired aesthetics, unappealing materiality, and an absence of distinctive detail," Nicholas writes.

"It is extremely disappointing that the REINZ should set such a bad example of architectural and urban design, when surely they should be promoting high standards within their own field. The REINZ should show leadership and commitment to improving the quality of the built environment. This project should be designed by a leading architect. There is no excuse for mediocrity."

A copy of Parnell Inc's submission can be viewed here. Submissions in response to the Resource Consent Application for 202 Parnell Road close today. Details about this application and the submissions process are on Council's website.
