Burglary surge in Parnell
Secure your property

Each Wednesday, the East & Bays Courier publishes "Crime Map" which shows reported burglaries across the eastern suburbs. Worringly, Parnell has seen a surge in burglaries over the past two months and has been one of the most hit suburbs.

Asked to comment on this, our Community Constable Tai Rossi reports:

What is of concern is that there is evidence to suggest that there are quite a few females who are offending and could appear to be less suspicious to people.

There have been previous burglaries where commercial premises have been targeted and entry has been gained via scaffolding where construction has taken place. They obviously can see through the windows from the scaffolding and target laptop computers. The most common method of entry seems to be forced entry through doors or windows, whereas residential premises seem to be by way of unsecured windows or doors. Cameras, lap tops and jewellery are the main property targets.

If people come across anything suspicious do not hesitate to call police. Sometimes people think they don't want to bother the police with something so small, but it could prove to be valuable information. Registration numbers, descriptions, number of persons involved and direction of travel is great information if it can be given.

I had one burglary where the neighbour heard the alarm go off but saw the gates to the driveway were closed and thought nothing of it. The offenders had come over the back fence so the neighbour had not seen anything. If this occurs again call police or observe from a safe distance the activity at the house for a period of time until you are satisfied that nothing is really taking place. Police will attend alarm activations and we will place priority to incidents based on the information given.

You can contact Tai at Auckland Central Police. Phone 302 6400.
To report a crime in progress, always dial 111.

Late night Pay & Display
Evening parking not a problem in Parnell!

As noted in the NZ Herald on Monday, Parnell is in Council officers' sights for extended Pay & Display hours.

The rationale for trialling the extended Pay & Display hours in the CBD (to discourage CBD residents from taking up car spaces overnight) cannot be used in Parnell.

If Parnell was targeted for nighttime Pay & DIsplay, it would be a straight money grab.

Visitors to Parnell already contribute handsomely to Council coffers: $555,000 gross take from our Pay & Display machines in the 2008/9 financial year - and that's not counting fines. (Compare $62k from Remuera, $182k from Ponsonby and $1.3m from Newmarket.)

Read up on Council's rationale for extending Pay & Display hours in the CBD. And be sure to take their survey by 5pm, Friday October 16. Stick with the questions - it's not till you get to Question 10C that you're asked: "Is it worth extending this proposal to areas outside the CBD?" Yes or No. Unfortunately there's no scope for further comment.

Should Council decide to move on Parnell next, further consultation will happen at a local level.

First Aid in the workplace
Does your business have a First Aid kit?

Every year thousands of people are injured or fall sick at work - some seriously. A quick first aid response can mean the difference between life and death, or can reduce the severity of the injury. First aid can also help protect businesses, by reducing the impact an accident can have on productivity and the cost of employees taking leave.

For more information, see the First Aid for Workplaces - a Good Practice Guide located here. It includes a good list of what should be in your first aid kit.

St John is a great resource for all emergency first aid issues. You can buy First Aid kits and a First Aid Emergency Handbook through them and take a variety of First Aid courses, including CPR and express courses on Workplace First Aid.
