Parnell Festival of Roses 2009
Featuring Parnell Road Market Day, 31st October

The 2009 Parnell Festival of Roses is only a few weekends away now. Parnell Inc. is organising the now-traditional Market Day for Saturday 31 October. With crowds of up to 20,000 expected in Parnell, this is an excellent time to show Parnell at its very best and highlight the fabulous products on offer along Parnell Road!

Auckland City's events team has organised a terrific line up of activities and performances at the Gladstone Road Rose Gardens including a Fashion Show featuring fashion and jewellery from Parnell boutiques (don't miss it - at 5pm), Shona Laing in concert, open-air movie "La Vie en Rose", tea dances and much more. See details here

Market Day info for retailers
Shops in the Parnell Road shopping centre (from St Stephens Ave to Heather Street) are encouraged to participate in the Parnell Road Market Day by getting into a rosey frame of mind! Parnell Inc organises cut roses and rose bushes for you to decorate your store, as well as trestle tables for Market Day. Order forms are being distributed today! (Balloons will be distributed to retailers on Friday 30th.)

Next week distribution company, Phantom, will be visiting businesses along Parnell Road with Festival of Roses posters, brochures and "table talkers" for cafés and restaurants. Please support this event and help promote it to your customers through these promotional materials.

Parnell Station gains ARC support
Compelling vision for destination station

Parnell Inc, together with Parnell Community Committee and architect, Nicholas Stevens, inspired the Auckland Regional Council's Transport and Urban Development Committee at its October meeting this week, with our initiative: to establish a destination train station at the Cheshire Street site in Parnell.

We've created a compelling vision and rationale for developing the KiwiRail land at Cheshire Street into a destination in its own right, centred around re-development of the magnificent carriage works building and highlighting the rich heritage of the Waipapa Stream valley. The plan also incorporates the old Newmarket Station building and signal house. (View our presentation online: http://tiny.cc/ParnellStation. This is an updated version of earlier presentations.)

ARC councilors were quick to grasp the potential of the area as a tourist drawcard. ARC chair, Mike Lee, said the development proposed would enhance the experience of visitors to Auckland. He urged the committee to make progress on creating the Parnell Station before the ARC goes out of business in a year's time. "This is a very very important station," he said.

Mr Lee hopes that a report requested on the Parnell community's proposal will enable the ARC to establish a position on the proposed Parnell station by year end, and that funding can be secured to progress the vision.

Burglar
In response to last week's story about the rise in Parnell burglaries, a Parnell Inc member did some excellent sleuthing last weekend. Paul spotted the man pictured trying to gain entry to the rear of his premises on Saturday and recognised him as the same man seen attempting the same thing at the beginning of the year.

"I followed him down Parnell Rd and saw him wandering around the back of many shops trying rear service doors and just walking straight into ones he found open. I called the police and according to them, he fitted the description of someone at the scene of several recent burglaries in Parnell. He is a big man about 6 ft 2 plus, quite solid and walks with a limp. He's not hard to miss."

Parnell's Community Constable, Tai Rossi confirms that the man Paul photographed is a suspect in a number of burglaries in the area. He asks anyone seeing this man to contact police so he can be questioned. For a better look at this man in a bigger photo, click here.

Shoplifter
Shona Loxton, owner of Galtons of Parnell, recognised Parnell Gallery's thief (pictured in the October 2 news) as the same young man who shoplifted a valuable item from Galtons earlier in the year. This man is a professional and knows exactly what he wants to steal before entering a shop. He works very quickly and is undeterred by the presence of store cameras. If this man enters your shop, our advice would be to ask him to leave straight away (which the owner or store manager are entitled to do) or make it clear that you are watching his every move - in fact, engage him in conversation and questions and make it obvious you are following him about!

POLICE: You can contact Tai Rossi at Auckland Central Police - Community Policing. Phone 302 6572 (Edward.Rossi@police.govt.nz.) To report a crime in progress, always dial 111.

Orsini moves next door
Beautiful addition to Parnell's shops

The Orsini Fine Jewellery store has just reopened in a larger space next door at 241 Parnell Rd. Owner, Sarah Hutchings, is delighted with how her business has been going in its first year and is thrilled to now have the larger space to showcase her beautiful jewellery, sourced predominantly from Italy.

The Orsini store was designed by the staff from Pianegonda in Italy. Sarah will also be showcasing jewellery from Marco Bicego and Hulchi Belluni.

Sarah would like to invite all the local Parnell businesses to pop into the store on the 20th Oct at 5pm-6pm for a glass of wine and nibbles.

Vadim Schurawlew -
National Bank intern

Interns a big help for businesses
English improved while working for you

New Zealand attracts large numbers of foreign students, who come to improve their English and then practice it in a business setting, working for free as interns.

In Parnell, KAPLAN Aspect language school places interns in a variety of businesses (including Parnell Inc. and National Bank - read more below). Contact Kate Gomm, ph 307 6507

Another source of interns, recently started in NZ, is INTERNeX International Exchange, which arranges internships for foreign students to start in upon arrival in NZ. Host businesses can be assured of a good match through a rigorous interview process that includes viewing resume, references, photographs, letter of motivation, visas etc. Contact Chris O'Callaghan, ph 021 664-525, www.internexnewzealand.com.

Parnell's National Bank has had valuable help from Vadim Schurawlew, who finishes his 8-week internship on October 29. Vadim plans on returning to Parnell next year as he writes here:

My name is Vadim Schurawlew and I am Russian born but have lived in Germany since I was 11 years old. I am currently doing an internship at the Parnell National Bank and am going to come back to work here next year because I love it so much. Read more....

I have been asked to answer a few questions so that the Parnell locals can find out a little more about me:

Firstly, if I were an ice-cream I would have to be hokey-pokey. Just like me it is delicious, sweet and full of little surprises !!! Come down to the branch and see for yourself...

I was asked what I would absolutely not be without if I were stranded on a remote island? My sunglasses, my razor and most importantly my bed. I hate having a bad night's sleep and certainly don't wish to wake up looking terrible.

My favourite lunch time dish has to be Pan Asia Dragon noodles. This has to be the best take-away in Parnell!

I ALWAYS came top of my class and the teachers always loved me.

My dream job would be working for the National Bank in New Zealand but it would have to be the Parnell branch because I love it here. I would love to work and live in New Zealand as for the first time in my life I have experienced abundant happiness. I have met the most exciting and interesting people and also learnt that I cannot get everything even when I really want it.

Over weekends I love to have fun on Saturday nights (dancing keeps me fit) and I enjoy relaxing on Sundays.

My favourite item of clothing is a TIE! It emphasizes one's professionalism and furthermore it amazes me how a small length of silk can change a person's entire appearance. And make one look sexier...

I don't have a favourite actress as my tastes change regularly because life is so fast-changing. But I love professional women.

Thanks to Marcia and Habib at Di Mare Restaurant & Café (The Courtyard, 251 Parnell Road) for a great dinner last night. Eating at this relaxed, family-run restaurant is just like being somewhere in the Mediterranean (if a little wetter, as it was raining) - wonderful flavours, amazingly generous portions and service that makes you feel like you're being cared for by good friends.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
