2009/10 Cruise Ship season underway
Featuring a lineup of very large ships
Auckland 's 2009/10 cruise ship season officially began last week with the arrival of the Star Princess last Friday. The liner was the first of 25 ships to make 57 calls to Auckland during the full summer and winter cruise season, which runs through until August next year.
Ports of Auckland's MD, Jens Madsen, said that while the economic situation had impacted some international cruise operators, the New Zealand market had shown resilience and bookings for the following year's season have rebounded to 69 ship visits so far.
This season, Auckland will welcome four maiden calling ships: the Arcadia , the boutique Seabourne Odyssey , P&O Australia's new Pacific Jewel and the Saga Ruby.. Other highlights include a call by Cunard's Queen Victoria on 13 February, and her much bigger sister, the Queen Mary 2 on 4 March.
Peak time for the season is February with 17 ship calls. In November there will be 4 ship calls, December has 5, January 10, February 17 (including three ships in port on the 2nd) and March has 6.
Parnell businesses can stay updated by downloading Parnell Inc's detailed Auckland Cruise Ship Schedule, beautifully compiled by our intern Johanna. It includes a little background info to let retailers know who they can expect to see about Parnell!
We'll be making Welcome
posters available once again from next week - details next Friday!

Parnell Police operation
Call police immediately if you see this man
Parnell's community constable, Tai Rossi, accompanied by other members of the community policing team, have been conducting an operation in Parnell hoping to catch the man pictured at left. Dressed in plain clothes, police have been checking residences around the Parnell shopping/business area for this man, and also the younger man who has stolen from items from Galtons and Parnell Gallery.
Described as a big, solid man, about 6 ft 2" tall, who walks with a limp, Tai says he is a well-known "stair dancer" - someone who will walk into any open offices and take any items of value if no one is looking. For a better look at this man in a bigger photo, click here. If you see this man about please phone police on 111 immediately.
Tai confirms that the man photographed by a member two weekends ago (observed testing many buildings for open side doors) is a suspect in a number of burglaries in the business area. Police suspect that another group of burglars are responsible for rsidential thefts in and about St Stephens Avenue.
POLICE: You can contact Tai Rossi at Auckland Central Police - Community Policing. Phone 302 6572 or email Edward.Rossi@police.govt.nz.
To report a crime in progress, always dial 111.

Hawkers on Parnell Road
Unfair competition for local shops
With summer and Christmas approaching, Parnell is starting to see an increase in people hawking fresh produce and gifts door to door. Unfortunately most of these people are unfair competition for our local shops - they often directly compete and have the advantage of not carrying the overheads associated with running a shop.
These people
exploit what appears to be a loophole in Auckland City's bylaws because they are do not sell from public spaces, but try to make sales on private property i.e. inside your shop or office.
Food sellers, such as the guy selling strawberries recently, must have a food stall license at the very least. If you want to challenge their presence here, ask to see a copy of their trading license. You can also ask Auckland City Council to investigate food sellers - give them some details such as the person's name and company name if you are able, and note vehicle details as well before calling Council on 379 2020.

Peter McIntyre - a collection of paintings
Iconic painter features in Parnell exhibition
At Jonathan Grant Galleries, four years of hard work sourcing paintings by the renowned New Zealand artist Peter McIntyre, culminated in the opening of an exhibition of 20 paintings last night.
The opening function was attended by McIntyre's son Simon who said this is the first time since the 1980s he has seen so many paintings by his father hanging in one exhibition.
Of special interest is a portrait of Kiri Te Kanawa painted in the 1960s, pictured at left with gallery owner Jonathan Gooderham.
The exhibition can be viewed at Jonathan Grant Galleries until the beginning of December.
