Mountain Fountain coming to Parnell
New home in Holy Trinity Cathedral forecourt

Terry Stringer's popular Mountain Fountain sculpture is coming to Parnell!

The sculpture will be an excellent addition to Parnell, which currently has only one major public artwork - close to the Fred Ambler Lookout on Gladstone Rd. the location of the sculpture at the entrance to Parnell's shopping centre will reflect the identity of the suburb as Auckland's Creative Quarter and home to many preeminent artists over the course of history.

Originally installed in Aotea Square in 1981, Mountain Fountain was removed in October 2008, as part of the Aotea Square upgrade. It is scheduled to be moved to the forecourt of Holy Trinity Cathedral in June 2010.

Council's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee voted on the site for the sculpture at its November meeting, held on Wednesday. After exploring a number of sites, including Selwyn Reserve in Mission Bay , discussions with the artist Terry Stringer, the Advisory Panel for Public Art and the Cathedral Council, clearly supported the Parnell site.

Public feedback strongly favoured the Parnell site over the Mission Bay site. Council's online survey, asking residents for their views on which location they would like to see Mountain Fountain relocated to, resulted in an overwhelming 82% (275 responses) in support of the Holy Trinity Cathedral site.

Mountain Fountain will be relocated to the paved forecourt area beside a green space slightly forward of the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The sculpture will be orientated so that the two sides with cascading water will face the open forecourt and St Stephen's Avenue, where they are most likely to be viewed. The concept design emphasises the visual connection between the Cathedral building and the sculpture.

Made of bronze sheeting attached to a concrete and timber substructure, the restoration and reconstruction of Mountain Fountain at Holy Trinity will cost an estimated $372,000.

Stuart + Carlyon get top Consumer rating
Excellent news as advisors celebrate 5 years in business!

Parnell's Stuart + Carlyon were one of only three companies to rate well in Consumer NZ's survey of financial advisors, released last week.

Consumer NZ sent mystery shoppers to 33 financial advisers, from large institutions with in-house advisers and agents, sharebrokers and nationwide adviser chains to small standalone firms.

An expert panel assessed the quality of advice and information in the 17 plans it received. Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said only three out of 17 advisers produced plans that the expert panel rated as "good". The others were rated as "disappointing" or were "rejected".

Of the advice received at Stuart + Carlyon, Consumer said: "The investments recommended by Deborah Carlyon of Stuart and Carlyon were good quality and the shopper was (quite rightly for them) not pushed towards a "wrap platform". Our panel thought the information on risk was excellent. It also liked the clear way costs were explained."

Susanna Stuart and Deborah Carlyon are both Certified Financial Planners (CFP CM ) and members of the Institute of Financial Advisers (IFA). This year they celebrate five years in business as Stuart + Carlyon, with $100 million in client monies under their care.

Changes at Tournament Car Park
Cheaper, safer parking at 290 Parnell Road

Tournament Parking has made some changes to its car park at 290 Parnell Road to improve the experience for evening parkers.

- The Maximum Evening rate in the car park has been reduced to $7. This applies from 4pm each day.

- Cameras have been installed in the lower level to enhance security.

- An attendant is now at the car park from 6pm to 9pm, seven days a week to help customers with using the machines and ensuring they have tickets etc.

Trees poisoned at Tournament Car Park?
City Council is investigating the health of the pin oaks located on either side of the entrance to Tournament Car Park at 290 Parnell Road (pictured at above at left). A council arborist suspects that, judging by the browning off of the new growth and the burnt appearance of the some of the foliage, some kind of poisoning attempt has taken place.

Should the two trees not recover, it would be a sad loss to the elegant line of pin oaks that extend along Parnell Road from Ruskin Street to St Stephens Avenue.

If anyone has seen any suspicious behaviour around these two trees in recent weeks, please get in touch with Parnell Inc. so we can pass on your information to Council and police. Phone 379 0606 or email info@parnell.net.nz.

NZ Retailers Assoc. on Street Trading
Submission to Auckland City Council draft bylaw

The NZ Retailers Association has made the following submission to Auckland City Council in response to proposed changes to the Auckland City Council Street Trading Policy: the sale and display of goods and services in a public place.

Submission:
The New Zealand Retailers Association would like to see the enforced licensing of Street Traders with a licence fee that reflects their privileged position. A minimum rental fee should apply for space utilised and this should have relativity with rentals paid by bricks and mortar retailers in that location.

Where a public place is designated for street trading then both Government compliance laws and local bylaws relating to OSH , food handling, Fair Trading, Consumer law and licensing must apply. These standards need to be controlled and policed and any notice to cease trading must be immediate.

The objective must be to eliminate illegal traders and encourage responsible professional street traders. In our view the footpath is an extension of the road carriageway and should be primarily for the use of pedestrians and mobility scooters and allow ease of access to shops and vehicles parked at the kerb. (We have no objection to the controlled provision of outdoor dining facilities).

Any Mainstreet or Business Association should identify public places where clustering of street traders is possible and desirable.

We also believe that the objective should be to create a street trading environment that is complimentary to the local area or shopping environment as opposed to creating direct competition or conflict.

To achieve this we believe the council should work with Main Streets, BIDS and Business Associations who would decide the licensed traders who can operate in their designated street trading area. This would include consultation with their bricks and mortar local retailers to approve or recommend the licensed traders who can operate in the area.

In summary we would emphasise that the New Zealand Retailers Association is in favour of street trading where it is complimentary and not in conflict with the local retailers in the shopping precinct.

Done well this type of market place activity can attract people to a local shopping centre and improve business for the established local businesses and retailers.

This is providing it is a licensed and controlled activity and the total cost applied to the traders has relativity with the local store owners.
