Leave your shopping to the last minute!
Fun Christmas shopping festivities in Parnell
We know people leave Christmas shopping until the last minute - so this year Parnell Inc is helping retailers make the most of that frantic last week before Christmas!
This Christmas, we're turning last-minute shopping into a treat for your Parnell shoppers (and diners too!) with evening music and festivities along Parnell Road to make last minute Christmas shopping fun.
Parnell Inc's promotion aims to help retailers maximise sales in this busiest retail week. We invite Parnell retailers to join us in staying open until 7pm (and longer if you wish) on Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December.
We've lined up a very special Santa, angels offering Christmas mince tarts, musicians and singers to spread Xmas cheer from 5 to 7pm on each of these nights.
Retailers, please help us swell this effort by offering customers special treats at this time, for example strawberries and champagne! Let us know what treats you have in store for customers on these three nights and we'll promote them on www.parnell.net.nz!

Christmas offers for members
See last Friday's newsletter for these great offers for Parnell Inc members:
1. Buy decorative lights at trade prices!
2. Christmas Spirit Best Shop Window Prize
Christmas Retailing Tips
Add On like never before!
How many of you have just one person to buy for this year? Probably none of you reading this! It's easier and more important than ever to sell additional items to your customers. Its great service, and good selling. You'll be adding to store revenue and helping your customers save time:
1. Always ask your customers who else is on their list? Who else do they still need to buy for?
2. Suggest a gift for themselves! In the US, 65% of customers bought themselves a gift last year. Ask customers if there's anything in the store they want for themselves!
3. Ask about holiday entertaining needs. Prompt them to discover what entertaining they'll be taking part in.
4. Talk up your stocking stuffers and other impulse items - simple, easy items for your customers to be able to say yes to.
5. Encourage gift card purchases, if you carry them. Try to sell a product first, but these are perfect for indecisive customers - and they never come back for a refund!
6. Men tend to shop with a single-minded focus, so it's harder to persuade them to consider other possibilities. But men don't want to take risks with purchases, so know your hottest items, hottest colours etc.
Create a lasting impression for customers: you'll be seeing lots of new customers so treat them to a great experience that will make them want to return to see you!
And don't forget to have fun - laugh, smile, enjoy yourself - If you are, your customers will to, and that's when they spend more money.

Employee Public Holidays rules
Special rules for 26 December and 2 January
This year Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Friday, and Boxing Day and 2nd January
fall on a Saturday.
There are no special rules for Christmas Day or New Year’s Day this year; these public
holidays are observed on the days they fall.
However, special rules will apply to Boxing Day (December 26) and 2
January because they fall on a Saturday.
For employees who normally work on a Saturday, Boxing Day and the 2 January are
observed on that day. For employees who normally do not work on a Saturday, Boxing Day
and 2 January holiday entitlements are transferred to the following Monday (28 December 2009 and 4 January
2010 respectively), if Monday would be a normal working day for the employee.
An employee cannot be entitled to more than four public holidays over the Christmas and
New Year period, regardless of his or her work pattern.
See Department of Labour's website for more information on public holiday entitlements, holidays and annual leave.
The DOL also offers an Online Tool for Holidays Entitlements

Parnell Security Assessment in 2010 Council grant funds crime prevention measures Auckland City Council is funding a Security Assessment of the Parnell Inc business area next year.
The six-week assessment, scheduled to start in March, will consist of a CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) site assessment including lighting; analysis of police data;
and a survey of Parnell Inc members. A report will identify the most appropriate actions to introduce or improve security measures for the town centre or business area's specific needs.
The security assessment is funded by a $500,000 grant approved by Council's City Development Committee in August. The grant emphasises the importance of supporting Auckland's mainstreets (and business improvement districts, including Parnell Inc) in their aspirations to provide a safe and pleasant shopping experience in the town centres.
Following the security assessment, Parnell Inc can apply to Council for grant money to help fund recommended crime-preventing initiatives.
