Leave your shopping to the last minute!
Late night shopping along Parnell Road + Foundation Bldg
We know people leave Christmas shopping until the last minute - so this year Parnell Inc is helping shoppers (and our retailer members) make the most of that frantic last week before Christmas!
This Christmas, we're turning last-minute shopping into a treat for Parnell shoppers (and diners too) with evening music and festivities along Parnell Road from 5-7pm to make last minute Christmas shopping fun.
Be sure to return to Parnell on Monday 21, Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December. Shops along Parnell Road and in The Foundation Building (Alfresco, Antipodes Design, Cavit & Co, Corso de Fiori and Fables) will be open until 7pm.
We've lined up a very special Santa (Parnell's one and only John Bishop III, now helping families become debt free faster at NZ Home Loans), angels offering delectable Christmas goodies, musicians and singers to spread Xmas cheer. Enjoy!

Vision X's winning
window is
always a
stand-out |
Vision X window a winner year round
Christmas Spirit Best Shop Window Prize
Vision X is the winner of Parnell's Christmas Spirit Best Shop Window Prize for 2009.
Visual marketing expert, Nicolle Aston, looked for windows displaying Christmas spirit, uniqueness, style and, of course, creativity.
Congratulations to our winners (who were rewarded with varying quantities of Lanvin & Fils champagne to celebrate the festive season) and to everyone who made a Christmas effort. Next year we want to see even more creativity and self expression to ensure that Parnell Road stands out!
Here's what Nicolle had to say about the winning windows:
First Prize - Retail: Vision X .... 259 Parnell Road
This window packs a punch from a distance. It has height, impact, and a strong focal point, with a modern creative edge and a clear representation of the store's product. The display uses imagery to generate desire (and brand status) as well as adding sparkle to capture the spirit of Christmas.
Second Prize - Retail: Parnell Pharmacy .... 295 Parnell Road
These windows have a good sense of balance and proportion with a broad representation of the store's product. The window displays communicate very well with the shopper, by linking the promotional posters directly with adjacent product. The rear window in particular is bright and bold in the festive reds of Christmas, with pinstripe paper adding a more refined look and helping to link the window displays with those in-store. The follow through with in-store Christmas displays is fantastic.
Third Prize - Retail: Flowers After Hours .... 523 Parnell Road
A business of this nature ought to demonstrate their flair for creative design and innovation, and they have done so beautifully. Flowers After Hours cleverly created a window with a pyramid stack of silver baubles. They continued the theme outside by hanging similar mosaic baubles from the beneath the exterior branding on the awning.
First Place - Non Retail: Space Studio .... 2a York Street
This business has expressed wit and creativity with the use of two comical mannequins dressed in Santa suits. They have made an effort that far exceeds that of other service based businesses in the area, such as the banks, eating establishments, travel shops, salons and real estate, many of whom have not acknowledged Christmas at all.

Johanna leaves Parnell
Farewell to another wonderful intern
Parnell Inc has been very fortunate to have the excellent assistance of German intern, Johanna Wegner for 12 weeks. Johanna has been fabulously helpful and obliging and many members will have come to know her (and see her several times a day even, especially towards the end of the year).
Johanna leaves for a tour of the South Island over Christmas and will be returning to Germany in the new year via Sydney and Tokyo.
Here's Johanna signing off:
Hello everybody,
After three month working for Debbie and Parnell Inc, it's time for me to say Goodbye.
When I first arrived, I was a bit nervous because I didn't exactly know what to expect. But Debbie, and of course all of you, made it very easy for me to settle into Parnell.
As you know, I came into your shops and businesses a lot over the last 12 weeks to tell you about Parnell news, and it was great that you've always been friendly and patient with me.
So thank you for all your help and for your support.
I really enjoyed my time here and I hope to see you all again someday!
Have a great Christmas and a successful New Year!
Johanna

Parnell Inc fire hydrant review
Fire Hydrants to be re-painted in 2010
Parnell Inc member, David Nicoll asked us to investigate the visibility of Parnell Road's fire hydrants after noticing that many markings were very faded. Given that the large number of wooden buildings in our area, it's obviously important that the fire service can locate hydrants in a hurry, if needed.
Our intern, Johanna Wegner, did a comprehensive survey of all the hydrants in the Parnell Inc business area and found many, such as the one at left in Titoki Street were almost invisible. Johanna rated all the hydrants on the quality of road, curbstone and hydrant cover markings and her report, together with photographs was sent to the New Zealand Fire Service.
Steve
Lakin, Assistant Area Fire Manager, took the report to a meeting with Metrowater and emailed, "The detail you were able to provide was fantastic and helped to describe the provided priority grading system."
Metrowater responded that Parnell's hydrants were last painted in 2008. The provider has organised to have them repainted by March 2010.

Yogi Bear shoot in Parnell
6am - 10pm, January 7 at lower St Georges Bay Road
Scenes from a scene in the Yogi Bear movie are being shot around Auckland in the new year, including one at lower St Georges Bay Road, between Kenwyn Street and Ruskin Street, on January 7 (with a rain day of January 8 or 9) .
There's a big cast and crew (200 - 300 people) and the usual bewildering number of trucks and support vehicles (40) and Council's events team warns that
filming will have a major impact on the area for the entire day so the production have been consulting extensively with businesses and residents who may be affected.
They'll be filming various shots of Yogi Bear, Booboo and Ranger Wilson walking and talking along the street. Yogi and Boo talk to a homeless person on the street.

Cruise Ships in Auckland
A huge week for cruise ships
It's a very big week for Cruise ships next week with up to 7,200 passengers arriving in Auckland. Two of the ships have FULL EXCHANGES, which means we can expect up to double the 1850 potential passengers from Volendam (20 December) and 3100 passengers from Diamond Princess (22 December). Tehn Dawn Princess is in town on Christmas day with up to 2250 passengers. Look out for an influx of Americans and Brits from these ships.
Parnell businesses can stay updated by downloading Parnell Inc's detailed Auckland Cruise Ship Schedule, beautifully compiled by our intern Johanna. It includes a little background info to let retailers know who they can expect to see about Parnell!
Parnell Advertising to the Tourist Market
Parnell on Auckland i-Sites
A number of Parnell businesses are supporting advertising on flat panel screens placed in hotel lobbys about Auckland. Parnell Inc. did not take up the offer to promote Parnell on these screens because we have, for three years, continued to have excellent reach on i-Site screens at Princes Wharf, Sky City and Auckland Airport, getting multiple 10 second exposures throughout the day.
In 2009/10 Parnell Inc also reaches our valued tourist and visitor market through advertising in the Auckland A to Z and its companion Auckland Shopping Guide, Welcome to NZ book (hotel rooms); Auckland Tourism's The Auckland Guide; and the Heineken Open magazine.
