Westpac positive on growth for 2010
Recovery for consumer spending
As we head into 2010 our positive outlook for growth remains unchanged. If anything, we have gained more confidence in our view.
Data at the end of 2009 confirmed that New Zealand was finally pulling itself out of the economic mire and that a recovery is on its way. The good news for retailers is that stronger consumer spending is expected to play a significant role in the recovery process.
Economic indicators are telling a convincing story of recovery for consumer spending in 2010. Consumer confidence remains elevated, and at current levels points to the pace of consumer spending growth picking up substantially over the first half of this year. Net migration is also high with actual net inflow of 21,253 at the end of 2009, compared with 3,500 in December 2008. We expect annual net migration to peak in early 2010, and slow to around a net 10,000 by the end of the year. Even so, more people overall means more spending.
The rebound in the housing market over the last nine months will also play a key role in helping to boost spending.
Mortgagors are continuing to get more cash in hand as they roll off high fixed-term mortgage rates. Debt servicing costs fell from around 17% of household disposable income in October 2008, to 13.3% in October 2009. We estimate a further fall to 13% by September 2010.
Consumer spending is also shaping up for a better year, with our forecasts suggesting above average growth in real spending. We expect real consumer spending (i.e., after removing the effects of inflation) to grow by 3.6% in the year ended 2010 and a further 3.0% in the year to December 2011. That follows a 1.2% contraction in 2009, and is above the average growth rate of 2.7% experienced over the past 20 years.

Parnell profile: Mozaik Coffee
Parnell's newest cafe at the heard Building
Mozaik Coffee, the newest addition to Parnell's cafe scene, is now in full swing at the Heard Building at 168 Parnell Road. The cafe is the fourth in a successful new chain operated by three partners Memet Ceran (the coffee roaster), Nigar Ivgen (chef) and Alex Isik (who is the best barrista, according to Nigar).
Their trendy and spacious Parnell cafe is a perfect fit for the renovated Heard Building - it's beautifully decorated, with comfortable seating and cosey banquettes in the atrium area at the back making it a great spot for meetings.
Most importantly of course, it offers a mouth-watering array of food (the dessert cabinet is enough to make any dieter lose their resolve) , made fresh on the premises every day, including Turkish bread.
Mozaik specialises in roasting its own coffee. There's a roaster by the front door and customers can buy fresh roasted Mozaik coffee to take home or back to the office.
Mozaik's partners, all from Turkey, made New Zealand their home years ago. Their extensive experience in hospitality is evident in this spotless and welcoming cafe.
The cafe opens at 6.45am every day of the week and, to begin with, is open for dinners three nights a week (Thursday - Saturday) offering, as Nigar describes it: "European food, with a Turkish taste but the New Zealand version." It's an extensive menu where you're sure to find something perfectly to your tastes.
Moziak is fully licensed. The atrium space can be hired for private functions and meetings. The cafe can also cater for functions.

Retailers: Be alerted to shoplifters by txt
Sign up to Shoplifter Text Alerts
This week we texted our Shoplifter Text Alert database with the description of a woman who slipped an expensive belt into her bag at Jane Daniels. She was spotted and the belt was put on the counter for her to pay for once she'd finished browsing. As expected, she left without purchasing it. Parnell Inc was alerted to the incident and we sent out an alert to shops in case she tried this elsewhere in Parnell.
Parnell Inc. retailers and galleries are invited to subscribe to our Shoplifter Text Alert service - it's free to members. Fortunately we don't have many issues with shoplifters in Parnell, but as a precaution, give us mobile numbers for up to two people from your business and we'll txt you a description of any shoplifters operating in Parnell.
Of course the effectiveness of this service relies on members to contact Parnell Inc. as soon as possible after they have been been shoplifted - or someone has been successfully intercepted trying to shoplift. We will only send out a warning to other businesses if we have a good description of the shoplifter, so please note details including: sex, height, build, distinguishing features, what they're wearing and other details such as bags, hats, and if they are with another person etc. Please phone 379 0606 so we can quickly share information with others.
Email debbie@parnell.net.nz with mobile phone details to be added
