Graffiti Guard cleans up the neighbourhood
Parnell Inc
membership benefits from top service
Graffiti Guard, the company contracted by Parnell Inc to remove graffiti and tagging on member properties, has literally gone above and beyond the call of duty at 92 Parnell Road.
The recent demolition of the site at the corner of Parnell Road and Garfield Street revealed unsightly large-scale graffiti and tagging on the now-exposed wall of 92 Parnell Road. Responding to calls for action from nearby businesses and residents, Parnell Inc asked Graffiti Guard MD, Tony Twiss, to paint out the entire wall. With consent from the building owner and site manager, Graffiti Guard quickly moved in to paint out the mess.
It's the largest job asked of Graffiti Guard since the company was engaged by Parnell Inc (then Parnell Mainstreet) in December 2006. Back then, Graffiti Guard began its contract with a major clean-up of accumulated graffiti and tags in the Parnell Road business area.
Under Graffiti Guard's care and attention, the quick removal of graffiti led to a dramatic reduction in such incidents in the area, and the ongoing service contract has kept Parnell Inc businesses almost completely tag-free ever since. Graffiti Guard's contract with Parnell Inc is paid for through the Mainstreet rate on member businesses. The contract ensures graffiti removal from all outward-facing exterior surfaces of buildings, power poles and sign uprights within Parnell Inc's boundaries (with the exception of non-member residential properties and interior surfaces of buildings), with no limit to height.
To request removal of graffiti or tags, please phone Graffiti Guard direct on 579 3256 or email graffiti@xtra.co.nz; or contact Parnell Inc on 379 0606 email info@parnell.net.nz

Art Riot in Parnell next Tuesday
Late Night Art, Thursday 11th
Sanderson Contemporary Art Gallery is holding, for the third consecutive year, its "150 x 150 x 150" exhibition, selling works by 24 artists, all 150mm x 150mm, for just $150 each. Doors open on Tuesday 9 March at 5.30pm.
Last year the queues of art bargain hunters and fans blocked the pavement down the street, and there were tense scenes inside as people ran to claim their favourite pieces. We expect an even greater melee this year, so start queuing early! Maybe this year we'll see sleeping bags and deck chairs on the footpath?
If you miss Tuesday's art riot, be sure to come to Parnell on Thursday night for this month's Late Night Art, with galleries open until 7.30pm. Make the most of the last of the warm summer nights to dress up and wander about the galleries. Art, wine, nibbles, music - it's another sophisticated night in Parnell.

The REINZ building
at 202 Parnell Road
|
Calls for REINZ to withdraw application
REINZ hosts second meeting with community
The REINZ held a second meeting with community representatives last Friday, to discuss community wishes for the a new development at the corner of Parnell Road and Denby Street .
REINZ CEO, Christine Le Cren told the small group able to attend that the Institute was not wedded to the original design put forward last year. That design attracted 27 submissions from groups that opposed the proposed development on numerous grounds. Christine told attendees that the REINZ wanted to get the development of the "lovely site" right and that there was no timetable for a development.
Jenni Goulding, a planner and spokesperson for Parnell Community Committee, reiterated that the REINZ's proposed plan was unacceptable. "The REINZ should engage a good architect, and any development on this site should comply with the Parnell Centre Plan in the District Plan; that is, fit in with the sensitive nature of the neighbourhood- being a heritage environment at the residential interface," said Jenni.
Although not all submitters were at the meeting, representatives from the community covered concerns and recorded that the protracted consultation process was not conducive to community involvement.
"We invited the REINZ to withdraw its resource consent application from Auckland City Council, as having it on 'hold' was achieving nothing, considering a major redesign of the project is required to consider all impacts of a new development - the bulk, scale, height of the building, traffic, earthworks," Jenni said.
"The REINZ has been made aware that the community is impatient with the application being ‘on hold' and the way in which this consultation process is being strung out. With the REINZ going through restructuring, this is a good time for this matter to be withdrawn," she said.

Parnell profile: Cruiseabout Parnell
Ocean and River cruise specialists
The Queen Mary 2's visit yesterday was an Auckland highlight of this year's bumper cruise season. Catering to this growing market, specialty cruising travel agency, Cruiseabout Parnell opened early last month at 177 Parnell Road.
Team leader Jo Matthews is joined by fellow cruise specialists, Eddie Puia and Rowen Neville-White in the new store opposite Heard Park. A division of FlightCentre, Cruiseabout has 15 stores in Australia and two in New Zealand.
(The first opened in Ponsonby in December, and another opens in Tauranga next month.)
International Cruise Council Australasia says 370,000 Australians and New Zealanders took a cruise in 2008, with Kiwi traveler growth in this market up 29% on 2007. "A cruise package can take care of up to 85% of your total holiday expenses, sometimes including shore excursions and alcohol. Taking care of most of your holiday expenses up front makes cruises a very attractive option," says Jo. "Plus the fact that you only unpack once!! Quite a delight..."
While cruises are now increasingly affordable, Jo says people are often reluctant to make a cruise ship booking online, especially for more expensive trips. At Cruiseabout's bright and airy store, travelers can make bookings with confidence after seeing videos of various cruise ship options and hearing first-hand reviews from the Cruiseabout team.
Cruiseabout specialises in ocean and river cruises: "Wherever there's a patch of water with a cruise boat on it, we sell it; from 2-star to 5-star plus," says Jo. "Small ship cruises for river and expedition cruises are growing in popularity. A cruise boat is a great way to see the Nile, Yangtze, Amazon or Murray Rivers for example, or to explore places like the Arctic and Antarctic."
Jo and her team enjoy great support from shipping companies. "We've been onboard every cruise ship in port, which gives us first hand knowledge to feed back to clients," Jo said. "I was on onboard Queen Mary 2 yesterday. It's an amazing ship, as long as a 23 storey building. It was very English and very grand, with lots of room for its 2500 passengers."
Cruiseabout also provides a full travel service around cruise trips - flights, land accommodation etc, as well as providing the full range of regular travel services.
