Additional street cleaning for Parnell Rd
Alcohol ban still failing to stop on-street drinking
Auckland City Council has significantly added to the street cleaning services provided to Parnell Road, in response to requests from business owners.
The additional cleaning services have been implemented largely to reduce the impact of late night revelers in Parnell. Unfortunately the Parnell Alcohol Ban continues to have little effect in curtailing on-street drinking, with police failing to effectively control breaches of the ban.
The unfortunate evidence of breaches of the alcohol ban (including bottle and tin litter, vomit and urine) often greets business owners on Thursdays morning. Parnell Inc. has, for several months, paid for litter to be picked up from business premises early on Thursday mornings to help assist in this area.
From Monday, March 8, Council has undertaken to provide the following:
- Daily (7 days a week) litter collection in Parnell Rd and Gibraltar Cres starting at 5.30am.
- Daily (7 days a week) general cleaning of the area from 6am. (This service is is that provided by our very thorough street cleaning orderly, Fatima Fanguna.)
- On Thursday mornings, Fatima will request water blasting of any areas affected by vomit, urine etc. Anticipated response time for the additional cleaning is within 2 hours.
- On any day, Council invites any business or resident to request same water blasting service from Council by calling the Council Call Centre on 379 202.
The new extended services provided by Council will be very well received, particularly by businesses and residents in the Parnell shopping area.
Parnell Inc. recommends that businesses take up Council's offer of water blast-cleaning and quickly call Council for such help if required.

Mint Kitchen canapes

Mint Kitchen caters to Late Night Art
Sensational food to go with exciting art
Mint Kitchen, the fabulous caterer that recently relocated to Stanley Street, Parnell, is providing Parnell galleries with amazing canape platters for Late Night Art nights.
Last night's art visitors were treated to delicious rare beef with mini onion jam on crostini, grilled mushroom and chévre in a filo cup with truffle dressing and house tea smoked salmon, creme fraiche, toasted sesame and grain toast.
The addition of such artistically presented canapes is sure to add to the flavour of Late Night Art - held on the second Thursday of each month, with Parnell galleries staying open until 7.30pm.
Make the next Late Night Art, on April 8th, a Parnell night with great art, wine and nibbles, followed by dinner at one of our buzzing restaurants.

Roger Honeybun's epic ride fundraising for Asthma NZ
Roger Honeybun, husband of Bella Cassita's Anita Maes and a Parnell Road resident, embarks on a 1,000km bike ride to raise money for Asthma New Zealand tomorrow. He's cycling from Christchurch (where the weather today is not at all good - raining and very windy) and is scheduled to arrive in Auckland on March 21.
Roger, who has already raised over $2,000 towards his goal of $10,000, writes: "I've done all the hard work; trained for and will complete this event; cycling from Christchurch to Auckland, 1000 km's along State Highway 1, but I really need your help to make a difference to Asthma.
"My great nephew, Sean Hedley, died last January of asthma and I would like to raise some money for Asthma New Zealand to assist with their great work in Asthma education and research.
"New Zealand has the second highest prevalence of asthma in the world affecting one in four children and one in six adults in New Zealand. It estimated that it costs the country over $1 billion annually.
Furthermore, research shows that more than half (54%) of those with Asthma in NZ are under-treated and do not have control of their asthma."
You can read more about Roger's mission and make donations on his fundraising site. You can follow Roger's progress on his One Man, One Road, One Cycle Facebook page. All the best Roger!

Bus stop change proposed
Do away with bus
stop on upper Parnell Road
Parnell Inc committee members met with businesses in upper Parnell Road recently to discuss issues of concern to local businesses and residents. Not surprisingly parking and bus zones were a major concern.
In response to member suggestions, Parnell Inc. is currently collecting signatures for a proposal to change the location of bus stops on upper Parnell Rd to better suit the needs of both businesses and locals. The proposal is to do away with the 2 city-bound bus stops beside the Parnell Rd shops between upper and lower Birdwood Crescent, and to direct city-bound bus users to the bus stop at St Mary's Close, opposite the Cathedral. A copy of the proposal is available here.

Seek out this found object art show
Pierre Peeters Gallery's humorous homage to Sauerbier
Pierre Peeters celebrates found object art with his first exhibition as the Pierre Peeters Gallery (formerly Aesthete Gallery). It's a celebration of artistic invention absolutely worth seeking out.
Pierre has brought together four artists who see more in found objects than meets most eyes. Often overlooked as rubbish by the artistically unimaginative, Andrew Hall, Keiran Donnelly, Felix Delux and Sean Kerrigan have reassembled the unlikeliest of objects to create works of humor, whimsy, depth and even comfort (Seans' work includes welded furniture).
These are artists committed to a different art cause, as evidenced by this warning on the exhibition's flyer: "Be assured that none of the artists in this show will never have, do have or intend to have ...a master's degree in anything whatsoever."
Their work honours Peter Sauerbier, NZ's father of found object work - where a natural object, or an artefact not originally intended for an artistic purpose, is used as part of a visual artwork.
The East & Bays Courier gave the exhibition a great front page spread today, but go see for yourself! Pierre Peeters Gallery, Habitat Courtyard (behind Sanderson Contemporary Art), 251 Parnell Road, ph 377 4832.
