Motorway closure likely to affect business
Southbound SH1 closed at Newmarket September 4 & 5
Here's a further reminder that Auckland is expecting major traffic disruptions around Newmarket as a result of the closure of the southbound carriageway of SH1. "Switch" is the 36 hour closure of the southbound Southern Motorway over Newmarket and opening of the new southbound Newmarket Viaduct.
The Southern Motorway will be closed southbound over Newmarket from 5pm Saturday. Southbound SH1 on-ramps at Hobson St, Symonds St and Khyber Pass will also be closed. The closure will allow final enabling works to take place ahead of the opening of the new southbound Newmarket Viaduct.
See the NZTA's site for further information including detour maps

Come celebrate Mountain Fountain Sept 12!
An invitation to a community celebration & concert
Auckland City Council and Holy Trinity Cathedral, together with Parnell Inc., invite you to join us in celebrating the arrival of Terry Stringer's Mountain Fountain in Parnell, on Sunday, September 12, from 5 - 7.30pm.
Please join our community in celebrating the re-siting of Mountain Fountain from Aotea Square to its new home in the forecourt of Holy Trinity Cathedral. The inauguration and dedication begins at 5pm and will include the Hon. John Banks, QSO, Mayor of Auckland city, the artist Terry Stringer and children of the school.
This ceremony will be followed by a free concert in the Cathedral, featuring renowned Maori soul diva, Whirimako Black; ‘Stars in Their Eyes' winner, Deryn Trainer, Philip Smith the Cathedral organist and a performance by the children of Parnell District School. Light refreshments will be served from 6.30pm, following the concert, in the Cathedral Forecourt. Further information at www.parnell.net.nz
Work continues apace on preparing this iconic Auckland sculpture for inauguration in its new home on the forecourt of Holy Trinity Cathedral. Bad weather has caused delays, but we're assured everything will be in order for the community to celebrate a new treasure and meeting place for Parnell.
This celebration is a free, family-friendly event to which all are very welcome. (In the event of rain, the ceremony will continue.)
Generous sponsorship from Gilmours
Parnell Inc.'s ability to provide hospitality to the hundreds expected to celebrate the inauguration of Mountain Fountain at Holy Trinity Cathedral on the 12th September, has been greatly enhanced through the generosity of Gilmours Panmure.
Soon to be the new owner of Gilmours Panmusre, Hamish McIntosh has been quick to support this community event. In turn, Parnell Inc is eager to support Gilmours Panmure and will welcome Hamish to our Business after Five meeting next month. If you purchase grocery items for your business, please talk to Hamish about ways that Gilmours Panmure can work equally well for you.
Gilmours Panmure is an easy drive from Parnell, at 153 Pilkington Road, Glen Innes. For further details phone Hamish on
ph 570 2946, mb 021 931 200 or email him at Hamish.McIntosh@Gilmours.co.nz
Thanks too to other generous sponsors of the forthcoming Mountain Fountain inauguration ceremony. Parnell Inc. associate members, The Rotary Club of Parnell, are contributing $500 towards the event and a number of Rotary members are helping run the event on the day. Wonderful to have you onboard!

No more tow-aways from Tournament
Cheaper parking tickets instead
Tournament Carparking, which has three carparks in Parnell - Tournament Parking opposite Parnell's Post Shop and at Carlaw Park, and Arena in Heather Street - will no longer be towing cars from its car parks. Instead cars found to be in breach will be issued a fine.
A new Tournament division, New Zealand Carpark Monitoring Services (NZCMS), now monitors all Tournament carparks seven days a week. Should they find a vehicle that is not displaying a valid Ticket or ID, the car will be issued a Parking Breach Notice for $45.00. This replaces the old system whereby Tournament carparks were patrolled by independent tow companies, with vehicles in breach towed away at a cost of $200, along with all the inconvenience involved in retrieving their vehicle.
Tournament does allow its customers a grace period of up to 15 minutes to pay for a ticket and place this in their vehicle. Rachel Valentine, CMS manager, reports that some customers are not happy to be issued with a $45 Parking Breach Notice. However the monitors will increase security in Tournament car parks and ensure regularly check that Pay Machines are working.
Rachel also noted that figures for car break-ins have increased across Auckland this winter, so the patrols will provide welcome added security for carpark users. Police report that thieves are no longer taking the time to remove car stereos, but anything valuable looking (bags, laptops, NavMan/GPS gear) can be taken from a car in around 3 seconds, and at any time of the day, even at the busiest times as evidenced by recent 8.30am break-ins at the Heather Street carpark.

Parnell Inc.'s Thinkers & Shakers
Inspiring talk by Andrew Hamilton
Parnell Inc.'s first Thinkers & Shakers talks brought Andrew Harmos, Chairman, New Zealand Exchange Limited (NZX), and, last Tuesday, Andy Hamilton, CEO of The ICEHOUSE to speak to members.
Andrew Hamilton's presentation on Getting the Kiwi Economy Moving: Government, Corporate and SMEs, (available online here) provided some rather daunting statistics from The New Zealand Institute showing the gap between our economy and Australia's.
The ICEHOUSE has hope that we can begin to close this gap by creating a virtuous circle: many more talented leaders and managers, helped by increased capital availability (together with policies encouraging talent growth and capital availability) can increase our number of internationally successful businesses, and thereby increase NZ's prosperity.
Located in Parnell, The ICEHOUSE is a business growth centre that creates learning environments for entrepreneurial firms to enable them to significantly grow their companies. Forbes.com rates The ICEHOUSE as one of the top 10 technology incubators in the world. Since 2001, it has worked with 75 start-ups and just under 1,500 entrepreneurial firms, raising $50m for these start-ups.
For start-ups with global ambitions, ICEHOUSE offers professional guidance, business resources, customised growth strategies, a global network and access to capital. For established companies, ICEHOUSE offers a number of programmes that help owner-managed firms to focus on turning their growth opportunities and plans into reality. For further information see: www.theicehouse.co.nz
Parnell Inc. thanks the award winning Invivo wine company for their sponsorship of the Thinkers & Shakers series.

Ubertec's (not so) Big Move
Only three more sleeps!
Ubertec, Parnell's Mac store, is moving to its new home next Monday, which should be only three sleeps away, although their site says four. They're moving 60 metres across the road from their store at 393 Parnell Rd to 3 St Georges Bay Road where they will also have carparking!
Ubertec's new shop, formerly a doctors' surgery, has been under construction and renovation for a while and work is still to be completed. Owner Talia Hochwimmer says Monday will be a soft launch, but expect everything to be up and running on Wednesday.
Meantime, if you want to help out, there may still be some relocation sale bargains going - because they really don't like carrying things. So the more you get, the less they have to carry.

Our shop is open:
Monday - Friday 9am to 5:30pm;
Saturdays 9am to 4pm. |
