The Parking Strategy consultation from Auckland Transport proposes changes to the management of parking on roads that are part of the Strategic Transport Network – the main transport routes that connect people and goods throughout Auckland. The map below shows the Strategic Transport Network, for which the principle is to repurpose parking for projects that deliver strategic transport priorities, except in exceptional circumstances. Both Parnell Road and The Strand are on the Strategic Transport Network.
The black lines show Sections of the Strategic Road Network identified for improvements in the next 10-years, (any available parking to be repurposed if necessary). This applies to The Strand.
The Strand is in Tier 3 – ‘Proactive parking management in areas of highest demand’ and Parnell Rd is in Tier 2 – ‘Proactive parking management in areas of anticipated demand’
The Draft Parking Strategy is a 10 year long-term strategy. Over the next 10 years, Auckland Transport say they will work with communities in key locations (such as Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas) to develop and implement parking management plans.
In addition to responding to their proposal around parking management, we also need to be part of the future conversation for Parnell and how we re-envisage our streetscapes in the future.
With regards to modal shift and the enhancement of public transport options, we need improved access to and from Parnell Station as well as additional busses along The Strand. We continue to advocate for Auckland Transport to fund the cycleway from Newmarket Park to Stanley Street/The Strand, via the old tunnel and along the railway line, as outlined in the Parnell Plan. We also need enhanced management around micro mobility, such a lockable bike racks both in Parnell Rd and The Strand.
