To kick off Auckland Artweek on October 6th, Auckland’s first suburb invites you on a journey through Parnell, from past to present.
The Parnell we experience today is the result of creatively minded individuals who have, throughout the history of the suburb passed on their defined patterns, designs, pathways and processes to us and despite the fact that both people and suburbs are altered with time, one thread remains. Art and creativity in all it’s forms.
Visit Parnell’s first bakery, now home to Auckland’s very own ‘Stitch and Bitch’ café; Let the galleries introduce to you by way of show-and-tell those gifted individuals with a flare for the creative who influenced the suburb.
End your day in Parnell Village, the quaint design that shaped the area and enjoy a cheeky tête-à-tête with Tony Astle of Antione’s about the Parnell social scene way back when scandal was encouraged!

Kick your morning wander off at 11am where Stitch and Bitch Lounge Café will be hosting Creative Fibre Auckland in the old bakery of Parnell. Try different fibre crafts on the day. Manu, owner of Stitch and Bitch will also talk to guests about the origins of worldwide Stitch and Bitch Groups in the war, as well as the fact that she is now located in one of Parnell’s oldest bakeries, and selling wool from…the original oven!
Yarn bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. To add colour, texture and fun to the laneway that leads you into Stitch and Bitch, yarn bombing was a must for Artweek this year.
See you at Stitch and Bitch for kick off at 11am.

Step into ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ laneway at 237 Parnell Rd and be transported into a yarn-bombed paradise like Auckland has never seen!
Once you’re inside, Elephant House will showcase a video of Les Harvey talking about his vision for Parnell. The showing will be upstairs at the Elephant House in Two Tusk Gallery. The interview is around 15 minutes long and is a hilarious showcase of 1970’s Auckland fashion, hair styles as well as an entertaining peek into the heart of a man passionate about people, life and Parnell. The video can be run any time there is demand, so wander in and enjoy.

Black Door Gallery presents Whisper & Shout. This dynamic exhibition will explore how artists can turn up or down the volume of their ideas through scale. Artists across a range of mediums will present artwork of two different sizes- both large and small. These pairings will show how an artist’s playfulness with scale creates unique perspectives on the underlying concept.
Jos Coufreur will be a featured artist in this exhibition. Coufreur’s new works fittingly find their inspiration in the heritage buildings of Parnell. Coufreur set out to illuminate long-standing buildings, which bear significance to the Auckland story. Coufreur selected buildings that despite their importance can be overlooked amid the busyness of city life. These heritage buildings are captured in his typical bold, colourful and expressive style, injecting the subjects with life and vibrancy.

Parnell Gallery welcomes Associate Professor in Museums and Cultural Heritage at The University of Auckland – Linda Tyler
Linda brings her expertise in New Zealand art, design and architecture history to Parnell on October 6th, for a person-to-person presentation at 12.30pm. Linda will talk through the history of people places and things in Parnell as it was, and what and who has made Parnell the suburb we experience today. A fun and historical talk about how the past can mould the present in more ways than we could ever imagine.
*The presentation at 12.30pm will last about 20 minutes so please be on time.

During the month of October in celebration of Parnell’s heritage, Jonathan Grant Gallery will exhibit a selection of paintings depicting Parnell and the surrounding area.
The Gallery will also exhibit a selection of works by Auckland based artist Zarahn Southon. Southon has a keen interest in traditional approaches to life painting and aims to convey a level of scrutiny and sensitivity to the figure in contemporary life. He often explores allegorical themes, portraiture and still life within his painting. Also apparent are references to contemporary Classical Realism, Restructured Realism, 19th century Romanticism & Dutch Genre painting. Zarahn Southon’s works are a perfect example of how outside cultures and themes can thread together and influence our local artists.

Kiwa Art is hosting Nigel How: A renowned, innovative and skilled artist who is passionate about maintaining traditional techniques in weaving, raranga, whatu and taniko. With his works on display at Museums around the country as well as working at Wairoa Museum himself, Parnell is lucky enough to have Nigel all to ourselves for Artweek 2018. Nigel will be in Kiwa Art on October 6th, weaving his magic into our suburb for the day which will no doubt be magical to witness. Come and not only have a look at Nigel whilst he weaves, but also say hello and have a chat to the man himself.

Parnell, the threads that bind us culminates in Parnell Village, 2pm, at a Parnell ‘high society’ institution – Antione’s, with canapés and wine
Born in Christchurch, trained in Wellington, based in Auckland and world famous in New Zealand, chef and owner of Antoine’s, Tony Astle has wined and dined the rich and famous with superb food since 1972 when he and wife Beth opened the doors of Antoine’s Restaurant in Parnell Auckland, and after four decades, Antoine’s Restaurant remains one of the finest dining experiences in Auckland, if not New Zealand.
Enjoy a cheeky tête-à-tête with Tony Astle himself as he takes a look back at the Parnell social scene in a time when scandal was encouraged. If only his walls could talk!
