February 2018 heralds in the Chinese New Year – Year of the Dog, so naturally Parnell as the suburb with one of the highest ‘dog to human ratios’ in Auckland, could not be more excited about it!
This year, 20 extraordinary Artists and Celebrities created individual works of art that were auctioned off to raise money for the Starship Foundation – National Air Ambulance Service.
Dogs are a man’s best friend and in Chinese culture, regarded as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune…A brilliant reason to participate in this years art auction!
The 20 exclusive ‘Dogs of Art’ were displayed in various Parnell galleries and select retailers for all to view, for two weeks from February 17th through to March 4th. Visitors were invited to pick up a map from local cafés and galleries or download here and take themselves on the ‘Dog Walk of Parnell’.
During the Dog Exhibition, you were invited to establish and secure your interest in any of the Dogs by making a pre auction bid, prior to it being formally auctioned on Thursday March 8th.
2018 is the third year in a row Parnell celebrates Chinese New Year and with only 20 artworks available, we had no doubt these precious ‘Dogs of Art’ would find their ‘forever homes’.
The final live auction for our ‘Dogs of Art’ took place at Jonathan Grant Galleries on the evening of the 8th March, with stunning results and record takings for Starship National Air Ambulance Service. All the dogs were sold to a room full of competitive bidders, with ‘top dog’ reaching the princely sum of $5,100! Click on any of the photos to see the final prices. Thanks again to all the artists, galleries and sponsors who made this possible.
