The Parnell Business Association in co-operation with Supertrash and Auckland Council is embarking on a six week composting trial, and we are encouraging certain businesses to participate.
Currently, 30% of what New Zealanders send to landfill consists of food waste. Food does decompose in landfill, but releases methane gas (a potent greenhouse gas) due to the anaerobic setting. A compost pile decomposes aerobically and no methane is produced. Composting food turns waste into a useful, nutrient-dense product, which we use to nourish our soils and plays an important part in the circular economy of food.
Parnell Road in particular has a high concentration of businesses that contribute to excess landfill and we are keen to support initiatives that would assist you to reduce that contribution. So the Parnell Business Association has organised a FREE six week trial period with Supertrash, an Auckland based company who help their customers divert over 200,000 kgs of Auckland’s waste from landfill on a monthly basis – and you could be part of this!
