Ewelme Cottage in Parnell will reopen on Sunday 14 June following a two-month restoration project undertaken by Auckland Council contractors.
The 162-year-old cottage, which is cared for by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, has been the subject of upgrade work, including repair of rotten weatherboards, new roofing and gutter upgrades, cleaning of the brickwork on a chimney, and repointing and bracing of the chimneys in the old kitchen and dining room.
And if that wasn’t enough, the outside has also enjoyed a general spruce up including the the garden shed, and a new front fence and gates.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is counting the days until Ewelme Cottage opens its doors to the public again.
“We look forward to reopening this significant and much-loved heritage landmark to the public in mid-June,” says Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Property Lead Auckland Properties, Tanya Wilkinson.
“Ewelme Cottage is known for its fascinating collection of household objects, many brought to New Zealand by the Lush family who lived here for over 100 years from the early 1860s through until the late 1960s. The cottage, which has changed very little since the family lived there, provides visitors the opportunity to step back in time and experience how a family lived around the turn of the 19th century.”
Ewelme Cottage will reopen to the public on Sunday June 14 and is open throughout the year on Sundays from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with the last entry at 3.45pm (or by appointment).
