Park and facility closures

A section of the path at Dove Meyer Robinson Park is closed due to a slip.

St Stephens Cemetery is running reduced services.

Parnell Baths will not be re-opening again this summer. The site has been assessed by Auckland Council’s Senior Geotechnical consultant, which has determined that there is elevated risk to the site and opening in the current condition is not a safe approach. Unfortunately, the decision to open the pool is largely based on the amount of access we currently have through Judges Bay Road, due to the need to provide emergency access for fire and ambulance services, along with essential deliveries to maintain safe operations.

Next Gen‘s indoor and spa pool are open. All other pools are still closed, but works continue to get these open as soon as possible.

To stay up to date with closures, visit Auckland Council.

Public transport

Eastern and Southern line services will operate to schedule, following the Rail Network Rebuild plan.

Rail Network Rebuild rail bus services will continue to operate on the Onehunga line and between Ōtāhuhu and Newmarket on the Southern line.

Western line services will operate between Britomart and Henderson at a 20-minute frequency during peak hours.

  • One train shuttle will operate between Henderson and Swanson, this shuttle will not operate to any schedule and will not be displayed on PIDS (Passenger Information Systems).
  • Single line running is in plane between Henderson and Swanson. Services in both direction will depart from platform 1.

Rail buses do not stop in Parnell—you will need to either transfer to an Inner or Outer Link bus at Newmarket or Britomart.

Please visit Auckland Transport for real-time updates.

The food bank at Church Unlimited is open to all in the area Tuesdays and Fridays, 12-2pm, offering food parcels. Church Unlimited is located on the Ground Floor, 2 Augustus Terrace.

Support for businesses

Several businesses in Parnell have experienced significant damage from the floods in Auckland, especially those in and around St Georges Bay Rd and The Strand. In addition to stock losses, many face a huge clean up and may be closed for a few days. Other businesses may be closed due to staff inability to commute safely to Parnell, even if the building has avoided weather damage. Please be patient, and check directly with the business’ own online web or social media for opening hours and dates.

Business.govt.nz has collated extreme weather information and advice for businesses, including:

  • Looking after your employees
  • Operating safely
  • Insurance claims
  • Finance and banking
  • Buildings and landlord responsibilities

The EMA have stood up their Business Helpline for all Auckland businesses. Please contact them if you need any assistance within your workplace on 0800 500 362.

Help will soon be at hand for Auckland businesses affected by the flooding, with a Government emergency support package including:

  • Flood recovery payments to help significantly affected small businesses (less than 20 FTE).
  • Mental wellbeing support through a boost to the First Steps programme.
  • Flooding Recovery advice focused on business continuity and resilience.

First Steps is available for support to manage stress and links to other useful information.

Weather updates

Due to the multiple bursts of heavy rainfall experienced since Friday, the region is vulnerable to further rainfall due to ground saturation. This means that even ‘ordinary’ amounts of rainfall will quickly exacerbate existing slips, river levels, and produce further flooding quite quickly.

We urge people to take these warnings seriously, and reconsider the need to travel in the time the warnings are in place.

To stay up to date with the weather and to keep track of storm warnings, visit MetService, Auckland Emergency Management.

Property damage and clean up

  • It is important to clean and dry your house and everything in it. Floodwater may contain sewage and other hazardous materials which can contaminate your home.
  • Clean up, drain, and dry inside as quickly as possible. Take out everything that is wet and that can be moved – floor coverings, furniture, bedding, clothing, etc., and put them outside to dry when the weather is fine.
  • If your gas meter has been affected by water or debris, contact your gas supplier.
  • Always work safely when cleaning up after a flood by wearing protective clothing and washing hands thoroughly after clean-up and before handling food.
  • Keep children and animals away from previously flooded areas until they have been cleaned and made safe.
  • Take photos and videos of the damage and anything that needs to be thrown away before starting the clean-up, for insurance purposes.
  • Throw away all food and drinking water that has come in contact with floodwater, including things stored in containers.
  • Do not eat garden produce if the soil has been flooded. Clean up and remove debris and sprinkle gardens with lime.

For more information, visit Auckland Emergency Management.

If you are affected by this emergency event, you may be eligible for a Civil Defence Payment from Work and Income.

Pet care

The Strand Vet have had an influx of cats with urinary tract blockages and infections due to the stress of the weather and being unable to urinate outside. This is a life threatening condition if left untreated and needs to be treated promptly.

Some things you can do at home to help try & avoid this are making sure you have litter trays for your cat inside and having a feliway diffuser running where your cat likes to spend time. If you notice your cat is struggling to urinate, vocalising while trying to urinate, seems uncomfortable and lethargic, or is producing low volumes of urine or urine with blood in it, please give them call ASAP on 09-377-6667.
