While we have certainly been blessed with more than our fair share of great new restaurant and cafe openings this year, it would be remiss of us to overlook the amount of excellent bars and pubs that have cropped up to broaden our watering hole horizons including Parnell’s Boxer.
Alongside the excellent restaurant and cafe openings that injected new energy into Auckland’s hospitality scene in 2020, this year also saw several beloved eateries master the art of reinvention and re-enter the dining landscape better than ever with new locations, menus and interiors. Refreshed and revitalised. Parnell’s Non Solo Pizza and The Golden Nest at Woodper Hill were some of the best restaurant reinventions of the year.
The results are in. The inaugural Denizen Everyday Heroes saw thousands of votes cast in support of local businesses. So without further ado, celebrate the best weekend markets Auckland city has to offer, as voted by you.
1. MOST VOTED: La Cigale The award-winning market brings a slice of France to Parnell every weekend, with fresh pastries and baked goods, French cheeses, artisan meats and top-notch produce among the extensive list of offerings. Come for a croque monsieur, stay for the unbeatable community vibe.

Everyone’s favourite Parnell Italian institution has been running smoothly for 24 years, and now Non Solo Pizza has been brought stylishly into the 2020s with a spiffy new look and delectable updated menu.
For decades Jeanne Bertenshaw has been committed to fostering her love affair with Italian design.
Having started design store Matisse 30 years ago, and travelling annually to the Milan Furniture Fair since, there is one company that has held universal appeal. In 1997, Bertenshaw acquired the exclusive distribution rights to B&B Italia in New Zealand, and has since enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the brand.
Doughnuts are a universally-loved delicacy, but not all cultures enjoy them with pink icing and rainbow sprinkles. Different countries have their own renditions of the doughnut. Gerome’s (Greek) Loukoumades are honey puffs that are impossibly fluffy and perfectly sweet. Typically soaked in a hot honey syrup, these doughnuts make for the perfect pairing with ice cream that melts into them when served hot.
Translated to English, Tiramisu literally means “pick me up” or “cheer me up,” and we can vouch for the fact that this delicious Italian dessert lives up to its name. Parnell’s Non Solo Pizza
NSP’s tiramisu is so good it takes pride of place as the only dish listed on the dessert menu. Their take sees sponge fingers dipped in espresso coffee and liqueur then layered with a mascarpone and zabaglione cream. Heavenly.
Everybody has a soft spot for pancakes. It may not be your breakfast of choice but it is a dish that nobody could dislike. A stack of fluffy, spongy and warm flat cakes drizzled with sweet maple syrup and melted butter — what’s not to love? 20-minute pancakes from Domain & Ayr Cafe
Stay true to their name, these pancakes require some patience but the end result makes it all worthwhile.
Korean BBQ is not all that Parnell’s Han Restaurant brings to the table. Meat is a very prominent component in Korean cuisine but vegetables have equal importance. The modern Korean restaurant is home to the tastiest tofu tacos and the best bibimbap this city has to offer.

From the owners of the esteemed Rosie in Parnell comes new neighbourhood dining venture, Little Rosie. This trendy eatery has been in the works for over six months.
Five years after it first opened its doors Parnell’s well loved and iconic Woodpecker Hill has had a bold interior change and is taking things in a new direction.
Parnell restaurant Cibo has long been a favourite for business types closing deals, dates out to impress and wedding parties celebrating their big day but now the team is dialling things down a notch by offering a super chilled Sunday option for frazzled families.
Cuisine Magazine recently featured a piece about Parnell’s Pasture restaurant and owner Ed’s new bar adventure, Mr Roboto. This exciting new Cocktail Bar run by chefs is due to open in the next few months. The bar fronting onto Parnell Road will also provide sole access to Pasture via a ‘secret’ doorway at the back.
Barulho’s era as tapas bar is no more. Meet Barulho the restaurant. The seating has quadrupled, with room for up to 100 patrons. There is also an atmospheric private dining room, and a kitchen large enough to finally meet the demands of a voracious and appreciative Auckland eating public.
The mantra ‘when one door closes, another opens’ could not be more perfectly exemplified than in this Parnell gem. What was formerly Barulho, the local-favourite Mediterranean tapas bar, has been transformed into Mexican eatery Fonda while remaining under the same ownership team of Sarah Ginella and Nico Mendez.
