As the Gallery Manager of International Art Centre, cubist artist James Watkins is no stranger to Parnell’s art scene. Now, his artworks are on display at 2.5m tall in Heard Park over Christmas, as part of the Beacons of Light installation.
For the past 20 years, James has been painting on-site at International Art Centre, drawing inspiration from his environment, conversations within the gallery, and the new perspectives he obtains through overseas travel.
Five of his works have been chosen for Beacons of Light—a selection of cubist paintings inspired by New Zealand artists like Louise Henderson, John Weeks and Charles & John Tole.
“Being chosen to display my work in a public space such as Heard Park is an honour,” says James. “ I love to think that it will be viewed and enjoyed by visitors to Parnell of all ages.”
The striking geometry and vibrant colours of his artwork make them a sight to behold at Heard Park, illuminated at night on their beacons.
Beacons of Light will be on display at Heard Park, Parnell, from 20 November—6 January.
