Public transport commuters rejoice—a new accessible path is now open, connecting the Parnell Train Station to Heather St and improving access in the area.
The Parnell Business Association worked with Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to advocate for improved access to the Parnell Train Station, located at the bottom of Cheshire Street. This is the second pathway to the station that is accessible for wheelchair and pram users, following the opening of a path connecting to Carlaw Park and Pukekawa/Auckland Domain back in August 2023.
The new path, which connects to the intersection of Heather and Bedford Streets, brings passengers closer to Parnell Rise, where they can easily transfer to an Inner or Outer Link bus. Members of the Parnell Business Association team have personally benefitted from the new pathway, which provides a quicker route from the train to our York St office and is less steep than alternate pathways.
The Parnell Business Association has also advocated for improved accessibility in the form of wayfinding signage. The Parnell Train Station can be difficult to find for those unfamiliar with the area, and in the past year we have seen the results of our campaigning come to fruition. Wander along Parnell Road and you’ll notice signage in Auckland Transport’s signature navy, pointing you towards the nearest pathway down to the station.
We’re grateful for these improvements to the Parnell Train Station, and will continue our advocacy with Auckland Council and Auckland Transport to further improve accessibility for train users. Our vision is for clear signage and accessible pathways at each of the station’s entry points, better connecting commuters to all areas of our beautiful suburb.
