It’s a momentous occasion for Parnell Gallery, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary!
Sally Souness founded The Hang Up Gallery (pictured) in 1976 at age 23, and has spent the past five decades making exceptional art available to dedicated art lovers and newcomers. Her youthful business plan was to provide both international and local limited edition prints to the New Zealand art market.
As the gallery grew and evolved, she rebranded in 1996, becoming Parnell Gallery. With an emphasis on original New Zealand paintings and bronze sculpture, Parnell Gallery has a regular and varied exhibition schedule.
Parnell Gallery is one of our longest-standing businesses, and a classic example of resilience and adaptation. Sally has bottled these principles to create long-term success. For her, several elements have made this possible: our local community and their support, consistently putting the needs of her customers first, and providing something good for the soul, just to name a few.
“We couldn’t exist without the loyal support of our wonderful clients, both local and global. The core of our business lies in showcasing quality artworks that resonate with visitors to the gallery (in person and online) and nurturing strong relationships with our artists. Our success is deeply connected to theirs,” says Sally.
Alongside their private celebrations, Parnell Gallery is commemorating this momentous occasion with Reflections, a group exhibition with a body of work attentive to time, continuity, and the artistic relationships formed over five decades.
Bringing together fourteen artists whose practices have grown alongside the gallery, the exhibition celebrates the enduring connections that have shaped its history. Rather than a retrospective, Reflections offers a moment of pause, a space to consider continuity, evolution, and shared experience.
The exhibition preview for Reflections will be held from 4.30–5.30 pm, after which the gallery opens to the public from 5.30–8 pm, joining the wider Rediscover Parnell Village and Art Battle festivities.
