Parnell heralds in the Year of the Rat, the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac, with a never been done before ‘street surprise’.
That’s right, this year Parnell is once again welcoming in the Chinese New Year with the sole purpose being, to raise money for Starship – National Air Ambulance.
How? By executing a Parnell first – Street Art bombing Parnell with ‘Rat Art’ and giving you the chance to purchase limited edition prints of these one-off works by some of New Zealand’s most famous Street Artists, online. Including work from the one and only…Flox!
Flox first made her mark on the inner cityscape of Auckland in 2003. Her trademark native birds, ferns and flowers – a celebration of Aotearoa’s environmental taonga – vibrant, confident colour; and scale combined with delicacy; magically transformed grey walls into vibrant depictions of the natural world meant we knew we had to get her involved in Parnell’s Year of the Rat Street Art extravaganza any way we could, and so we did!
They say that Street Art is important to keep urban areas energized and inspired as well as generate surprise and that’s the goal in Parnell this Chinese New Year thanks to the clever little star of the show, the Rat. Parnell is the Pied Piper, and our esteemed artists followed the call to create one-off Street Art for you to purchase and enjoy.
During the Chinese New Year period, starting on Monday January 27th, the Parnell Business Association will let you know where ‘Street Rat public art’ is popping up around some of Parnell’s most loved spots. We encourage you to follow the daily clues provided on social media, find the street rats, and post your daily ‘rat finds’ to be in to win the daily prize. Of course, once you’ve done that, you’ll no doubt want to get back to your computer and buy your favourite Rat Art online in the form of limited-edition digital prints!
All Street Art will be available online at https://shopparnell.net.nz/parnell-year-of-the-rat/ to purchase. There are only 21 editions available of each work of ‘Ratty Street Art’ so if you wait too long for your favourite street art print by your favourite artist, it’s likely you’ll miss out. Also, because you’ll no doubt find it hard to choose just one print, we’ve made sure the price point of each means you could get a few to tell the story in your home of the cute little rat and how you chose to support Starship during 2020, the Year of the Rat.
How did the Rat come to be the first sign of the Chinese Zodiac? In the competition held by the Jade Emperor to decide the order of zodiac animals’ way back when, the strategic little rat rat asked the ox to take him on a ride to cross the river and then jumped down in front of the ox before he crossed the finish line, making the cheeky rat number one!
Be like the resourceful quick-witted Rat and make sure you’re in first for the limited-edition rat art. You’ll not only be getting exclusive art by some of New Zealand’s most famous street artists, but you’ll also be helping raise money for Starship at the same time.
