Safety Improvements Pedestrian Crossings

Parnell Road ONE WAY ROAD CLOSURE, APR 2019

Auckland Transport have announced that following the safety consultation below, they will be commencing works on 3 pedestrian crossings over the Easter Holiday period. However the disruption will be significant and we urge you take a look at the information below as not only will this affect businesses located in Parnell, but also commuters.

Pedestrian Crossings

Auckland Transport (AT) is introducing Speed Tables across Central Auckland routes to help to slow traffic and keep our communities and pedestrians safe.

  • AT is planning to complete the construction of three Speed Tables on Parnell Road, along with Footpath and Tactile Paver works over the Easter period. Three work sites along Parnell Road (Outside 119 Parnell Road, 167 Parnell Road and 215 Parnell Road) will have the following works undertaken: Kerb, Footpath and Tactile Paver replacement and the construction of a concrete Speed Table over the full width of the road.
  • Civil Works will take place from Saturday 13th of April 2019 7:00AM, to Sunday the 28th of April 2019 5:00PM. (weather dependant)
  • Traffic Management – From Saturday 13th of April 2019 05:00AM, to Monday the 29th of April 2019 5:00AM, One lane closure will be in established
  • The nature of the work does mean that there will be some noisy operations, however, controls will be in place to minimise disruption as much as possible.
  • From Saturday April the 13th 05:00AM to Monday the 29th of April 5:00AM Parnell Road will be reduced to one way southbound traffic (i.e traffic going up the hill). Northbound traffic (i.e.traffic going down the hill) will be detoured via St Stevens Ave, Gladstone Road, The Strand and Parnell Rise.
  • Access into and out of the following side streets off Parnell Road: Akaroa St, Windsor St, Ruskin St, Tilden St, Denby St, Gilbraltar Cres, Birdwood Cres, St Georges Bay Rd and St Stephens Ave will still be available, however, this will need to be in accordance with the southbound flow.
  • During this time, there will be a reduction in the amount of parking available along Parnell Road.
  • Access to all residences and businesses will be maintained at all times, however, traffic detours will be in place during this time.
  • Please refer to the PDF for exact details

Link Buses

    • As with vehicle traffic, from Saturday April the 13th 05:00AM to Monday the 29th of April 5:00AM Parnell Road will be reduced to one way southbound traffic (i.e traffic going up the hill). Northbound traffic (i.e.traffic going down the hill) will be detoured via St Stevens Ave, Gladstone Road, The Strand and Parnell Rise.
    • So the Inner and Outer Link buses will travel up Parnell Road as usual, but when travelling from Newmarket back to the city, they will be diverted along Gladstone Road and The Strand.
    • Please review the following maps for stops and guidelines
Buses travelling from Newmarket to the city will be temporarily routed along St Stephens Ave, Gladstone Road and The Strand, while buses travelling from the city to Newmarket will follow the usual route up Parnell Road.

Benefits of raising these crossings
All locations will be transformed by raising the crossing onto a table. This is proven to be an effective means of slowing vehicles to 30 km/h or less. Slow speeds are essential to ensure pedestrian safety. Depending on the location of the crossing, changes may also include building out the kerb, and/or new refuge islands that will shorten crossing distances for people on the footpath.

Other new safety features include: improved signage, surface treatments, road markings and lighting. These will increase the visibility of pedestrians, and create a safe environment for all road users, at all times.
