Nothing warms the cockles on a cold night quite like sipping a warming cocktail in a cosy bar.
Fortunately Parnell is full of places that fit exactly that bill. Some might take a bit of finding, but we’re sure you’ll agree it’s worth the effort when you’re ensconced in a snug space with a vibe—as well as drinks—that’ll warm you from the inside out. Here are a couple of the best, hand-picked by Stuff.
Head to Spain via the South Island at this intimate tapas bar in posh Parnell. With sturdy wooden furniture and what looks like blonde tussock grass hanging from the ceiling, it certainly wouldn’t look out of place in small-town Otago.
The tapas dishes showcase quality New Zealand ingredients such as Aoraki salmon, Wakanui beef and Clevedon tomatoes, but have an international twist. On a cold night, the wild mushroom dumplings and lamb tacos are bound to defrost you from the inside out.
The excellent wine list and regular live music are added bonuses.
Guests are encouraged to dress up and refrain from using social media at this hidden cocktail bar on Parnell Road.
If at first you don’t succeed in finding the entrance—a door with a golden pineapple on it—try and try again. We’re sure you’ll agree it was worth the effort when you’re seated in the elegant room beside the fireplace, gold mirrors and a chandelier overhead, and waiters in ties and vests. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be treated to a piano performance.
Cocktails are perfectly executed, and there’s a range of beers and wines available too.
