One of the better things to come out of the pandemic was the opening of this gorgeous, independent bookstore on Parnell Road, which was rated as one of Auckland’s best independent bookstores by Denizen Magazine.
Launched by friends Melanie O’Laughlin and Courtney Smith, Lamplight boasts an exquisite fit-out by Buster Caldwell of Wonder Group, in which the store’s considered and curated titles—which span new releases, best-sellers, all of the classics, Te Ao Māori titles and so much more, as well as offering a special focus on art, architecture and design—have been given a sleek, contemporary backdrop against which to be displayed. This is the kind of bookshop in which we could happily browse for hours.
417 Parnell Road
The newest book store to open in Parnell, Blue Hills offers a great range of secondhand books, from contemporary to classic and everything in between.
There’s also a great selection of for younger readers, with stories suited to children, teens and young adults.
213 Parnell Road
One of New Zealand’s most beloved book store chains, Paper Plus sells books, stationery, games and greeting cards. Stocking the latest novels and non-fiction books, there’s something for everyone here.

The only thing better than a good book is getting a good book for free! The Parnell Library has a huge collection of books you can borrow, including e-books and audiobooks.
Pop in to check out what’s currently on display—you can even find a spot in the library to curl up and get lost in a book!
